I’ve always thought that Penal Substitution was inadequate and even dishonouring to the grandeur of God and sold short His good creation so looking forward to hearing of a better Christus Victa in the next conversation.

Yes indeed Will. i think we have all debunked PSA but now the task is to keep building an alternative model that does more justice to the Cross and God's victory. I think Ben has lots to offer here.

Once one beholds the magnitude of the goodness of our God it brings a smile and a wonder that never leaves. The only sadness is the goodness is so often sold short by the brethren alienating many seekers from beginning the wonderful journey.

Amen. this is a real sadness which is dawning more and more on my mind. Just how badly have we twisted the gospel, to accommodate a pagan view of deity - so well described by John Walton for us. I think this 'Zeus' type conception of the deity is deeply ingrained in the human psyche, and foreshadowed in the temptation ('God is not good and does not intend good for you...'). So even CHristians often do not shake off this undercurrent of pagan fear and colour their picture of God with it. a kind of modern syncretism. I think this 'despotic' undercurrent in the view of God was wonderfully skewered by Bulgakov on his devastating critique of Augustine in the essay on Augustine and predestination...
