Tony is so right in pointing out the poverty of contemporary thought. Carl Sagan's understanding of the cosmos has taken hold everywhere. Yet we have authors like Ted Chiang who explore the fringes (The Story of Us, movie - Arrival). Language does not describe reality, rather it defines, or even creates reality as the Sapir Whorf theory suggests. Which makes reality a personal confrontation with the God who is there.
